Picture it. You just landed at San Juan, you’re standing at the rental counter, and the agent slides over a sheet with collision waivers, liability add-ons, and a daily price that’s creeping toward what you paid for the car itself. Do you need any of it?
Often, no. Most personal auto policies from the mainland define their coverage area as the United States, its territories, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Puerto Rico is usually written in by name. So the coverage you carry at home generally follows you to a rental on the island.
Generally. Here’s what to check before you fly.
1. Do you carry collision and comprehensive at home? Liability travels with you, but dents and damage to the rental are covered only if your own policy includes collision and comprehensive. Liability-only at home means liability-only in Puerto Rico.
2. What about the fees nobody mentions? Rental companies can charge for the days the car sits in the shop, plus admin fees. Some policies cover those and some don’t. A quick call now beats an argument later.
3. What does your credit card add? Many cards include rental car coverage when you pay with that card and decline the counter’s waiver. It’s often secondary, meaning it picks up after your auto policy, and some cards exclude certain vehicles. Read your card’s benefits page before the trip, not at the counter.
