The cars on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway rotate slowly as they climb, which means everyone on board gets a full turn of the view without having to fight for a window spot. It’s one of the tramway’s better design decisions, and it’s also the first thing most first-timers mention afterward, right before they mention how cold it was at the top.
The Temperature Swing Is the Whole Point
You board in the desert, palm trees and heat, and step off the tram into a mountain forest that can be dramatically colder, sometimes cold enough for snow when the desert floor is still warm. Dress in layers no matter what season it is down below. A jacket that feels unnecessary in the parking lot becomes the thing you’re grateful for ten minutes later.
Buy Tickets Ahead if You Can
Lines build up fast, particularly on weekends and around midday, and the tramway does sell out on busy days. Booking ahead when the option is available saves standing in a queue that can eat a real chunk of your afternoon before you’ve even started climbing.
What’s Waiting at the Top
Mountain Station has a restaurant, an observation deck, and access to hiking trails that range from an easy loop to routes that require real planning and gear. Even if hiking isn’t the plan, the observation areas alone are worth the ride, since the view back down over the valley is the kind of thing photos undersell.
Timing the Ride
Early morning rides tend to be quieter and cooler, which matters more in summer when the desert floor is already hot by mid-morning. Sunset rides are popular for the obvious reason, watching the light change over the valley, but they also mean a colder ride back down after dark, so that jacket earns its keep twice.
Coming Back Down
The descent runs the same as the climb, a slow rotation and the same views in reverse, and the temperature climbs back toward normal the closer you get to the valley floor. Give yourself more time than feels necessary for the whole outing. Between ticket lines, the ride itself, and time at the top, a trip that looks like it should take an hour tends to fill most of an afternoon.
