One thing surprises people new to Boulder. The sun sets behind the mountains, which means it disappears earlier than the clock suggests and the sky keeps going long after. The best sunset spots here are less about watching the sun itself and more about catching the colors that spill across the Flatirons and the plains.
The easiest one is Chautauqua. Walk up onto the meadow a little before sunset and watch the rock faces change color above you. It’s popular for a reason, and on a warm evening you’ll share it with picnic blankets and dogs.
Wonderland Lake in north Boulder is a quieter option. The water catches the colors, the foothills sit right behind it, and the short loop around the lake is flat enough for anyone. Homes along the edge of town like this have some of the best views in the city, which is also why owners here tend to think carefully about home coverage given how close they sit to open space.
For a big sky, head out to Boulder Reservoir. The mountains line up across the water and the whole range turns pink and orange as the light goes. Bring a jacket, because it cools off fast once the sun is gone.
Davidson Mesa, just over in Louisville, is the local secret that isn’t much of a secret anymore. The view stretches along the whole Front Range, and on a clear evening it’s hard to beat.
And if you’re willing to drive a little, Flagstaff Road climbs above town with pullouts looking back over the city as the lights come on.
Visitors staying a few nights sometimes choose a place purely for a west facing deck, and honestly, we get it. Hosts who list a home with that kind of view tend to ask us about rental coverage in Boulder before the first booking comes in.
We’re a concierge insurance agency based right here in Boulder, and we’ll admit we sneak out for a sunset more often than we probably should.
