Nope, not really. Original Medicare generally stops at the border, which is the same story we told about US health plans in Israel. The exceptions are so specific they’re almost trivia, like an emergency while traveling through Canada between Alaska and another state. A beach week in Cabo or a month in San Miguel de Allende doesn’t qualify.
So what does help?
Medigap’s travel perk. Several Medigap plans, including the popular Plan G and Plan N, include foreign travel emergency coverage. It pays 80% of emergency care abroad after a $250 yearly deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime limit, and only for emergencies that start within the first 60 days of a trip. Genuinely useful, but not a full safety net, and it won’t bring you home. As Medicare brokers, this is one of the details we flag for travelers when they’re picking a plan, since it can tip the choice.
Some Medicare Advantage plans. A few include worldwide emergency or urgent care. It varies a lot plan to plan, so read yours before you pack.
Travel medical insurance. This fills the gaps, especially medical evacuation. Getting flown back to the US after a serious injury can cost more than most people’s cars, and neither Medicare nor Medigap pays for it. Also know that many private hospitals in Mexico want payment up front, and you file for reimbursement later. Bring a credit card with room on it.
