Will Travel Insurance Cover Ski Injuries?

Will Travel Insurance Cover Ski Injuries?

Most of the time, yes. A standard travel insurance plan with medical coverage treats recreational skiing and snowboarding at a resort like any other activity, so a torn ACL on a groomed run is usually a covered medical claim.

The details are where ski trips get tricky.

In bounds is covered. Out of bounds often isn’t. Many plans exclude backcountry skiing, heli-skiing, cat skiing, and racing unless you add an adventure sports upgrade. Ducking a rope or ignoring a closure can void coverage even on a plan that covers skiing.

Rescue is its own line. Ski patrol inside the resort generally doesn’t bill you. A rescue from outside the boundary, or a helicopter, can. Look for search and rescue or emergency evacuation benefits, and check the dollar limit. We get into the terrain questions on our Vail ski trip coverage page.

Your health insurance probably helps, with gaps. If you’re skiing in the US, your regular health plan usually covers the injury itself. But an out-of-state resort can mean out-of-network bills, a high deductible, and no help at all with getting you home. Skiing abroad is a different story, which we covered for skiing in Chile.

Your pass isn’t insurance. Season pass coverage is mostly about refunding the pass if you can’t use it. It doesn’t pay medical bills or your flights and lodging.

The trip costs count too. If you blow out a knee on day two, trip interruption can reimburse the unused lodging, lessons, and the change fee to fly home early. That’s often worth more than people expect.

And if the injury keeps you off work? That’s a job for a different policy entirely, which we explain in disability after a ski injury.

The simplest way to get this right is to tell someone exactly what you plan to do. We’re brokers, so we can match the plan to the trip, whether that’s a week of groomers or a hut trip in the backcountry, and point out the one exclusion that would have mattered. For a classic resort week, our Breckenridge ski insurance page shows what a typical plan looks like.
