Most people visiting Pearl Street for the first time assume parking is going to be a headache. On weekdays during the middle of the day, they’re not entirely wrong. On weekends, they’re paying for parking they didn’t need to pay for.
Weekends: the garages are free
Saturday and Sunday, the City of Boulder’s downtown parking garages don’t charge. That includes the main garages people use to access Pearl Street. You drive in, park, walk out, and walk back whenever you’re done. No ticket, no app, no rushing back to feed a meter.
The one exception is the garage at 3183 Pearl Street near Boulder Junction, which charges all seven days. Avoid that one on weekends and you’re fine.
Weekdays are different
Monday through Friday, the city garages charge a modest hourly rate, usually a couple of dollars an hour. There’s a short grace period if you register your car through the Metropolis app before you leave, which is useful if you’re just running a quick errand. Later in the afternoon on weekdays, the rate drops to a low flat fee that covers you into the night, which is useful to know if you’re coming for dinner. Worth checking the current rates on the city’s parking page, since they get adjusted from time to time.
The garages use a fully gateless system, so there’s no ticket to grab when you pull in. You register your plate through the Metropolis app or a QR code on the garage wall, and it handles the billing automatically when you leave.
On-street meters
Street parking along and around Pearl Street runs a few dollars an hour, enforced during the day and into the early evening. Once enforcement ends for the night, it’s free. On weekends, the meters still run during the day, so if you’re parking on the street instead of in a garage on a Saturday, you’re paying more than you have to.
One current thing to know
The Spruce Street Parking Garage is temporarily closed for renovations, which takes one of the downtown options out of rotation for a stretch. If you’re visiting during that window, the 15th Street garage and the other downtown options are your best bets. Worth checking the city’s parking page before you go, since that situation will resolve itself eventually.
The practical version of all this
Show up on a weekend, use any city garage except the Boulder Junction one, and park for free. Show up on a weekday, get there by midmorning before it fills up, plan on a couple of dollars per hour, or come later in the afternoon and pay the flat rate. The on-street meters aren’t a bargain compared to the garages, so if there’s a garage nearby, that’s usually the better move.
