The No-Nonsense Guide to Commercial Insurance

Listen, running a business is hard enough without having to decypher what your insurance policy actually does. You probably just want to know you’re protected if things go south, without paying for a bunch of extra stuff you don’t really need.

Here’s the deal: commercial insurance is basically your safety net. If a customer slips in your store, or if one of your employees gets hurt, or even if your equipment gets stolen, the right policy is what stands between you and potential bankruptcy. But it’s not a one-size fits all kind of thing.

The Foundation: General Liability

Most folks start with a General Liability policy. This covers the basic “oops” moments. Somebody gets hurt on your property, or you accidentaly damage someone else’s stuff while working. It’s the bare minimum, really.

If a client trips over a cord in your office, this is the policy that pays their medical bills and defends you if they decide to sue.

Don’t Skimp on Workers Comp

Then there’s Workers Comp. If you have employes, you pretty much have to have this in most states.

Why It’s Mandatory

It covers their medical bills if they get injured on the job and pays a portion of their lost wages. Don’t skimp on this, the fines for not having it are brutal. Plus, it protects you from being sued by an injured employee.

Protecting Your Physical Assets

Another big one that people overlook is Commercial Property insurance.

Even if you don’t own the building, you still need to cover your inventory, your tools, your computers… basically anything that would cost money to replace if there was a fire or theft. If your business runs on specialized equipment, you need to make sure those specific items are listed and covered for their replacement value.

The Personal vs. Business Auto Trap

The biggest mistake I see business owners make is assuming their personal insurance will cover their business stuff. It won’t.

If you’re driving your personal truck for work and get in a wreck, your personal auto policy might just flat out deny the claim. You need commercial auto for that. Delivery drivers, contractors carrying tools, or real estate agents driving clients around all need to seriously look into a commercial auto policy.

Next Steps

My advice? Find an independant agent (like us) who can shop around for you. Don’t just go with the first quote you see online. Get someone who will take the time to understand your specific business and what your actual risks are. It takes a little more time upfront but it saves you massive headaches later on.
