Best Beaches Near Tel Aviv for a Day Trip

Tel Aviv might be the only major city where you can finish a meeting, walk fifteen minutes, and be in the Mediterranean. The whole city runs along a long stretch of sand, and the Tayelet, the promenade that connects most of it, makes it easy to wander from one beach to the next without ever needing a car.

Not every beach feels the same though. Some are loud and packed, some are quiet enough to actually read a book, and a couple are worth the short drive out of the city if you have a free afternoon.

Gordon Beach

Gordon is one of the most central beaches and probably the easiest one to find if you’re staying near Hayarkon Street. It gets busy, but in a good way. Volleyball nets, beach chairs for rent, and right next to it sits the Gordon Pool, a saltwater swimming pool built right on the seafront for anyone who wants laps without the waves.

This is a solid first stop if it’s your first day and you just want to get oriented.

Frishman Beach

A few minutes south of Gordon, Frishman tends to draw a younger, more local crowd. It’s a good spot to grab a drink from one of the beachside kiosks and just watch the sun go down, which in Tel Aviv is its own kind of event most evenings.

Weekends get crowded fast. If you’re going on a Friday or Saturday, getting there before mid-morning makes a real difference in finding space near the water.

Hilton Beach

Just north of Gordon, Hilton Beach has a personality all its own. It’s known as the city’s main LGBT-friendly beach, there’s a fenced-off section for dogs, and the northern end is where you’ll find windsurfers and kayakers running drills most mornings. There’s also a small surf club that rents gear and offers lessons if you’ve never tried it.

It’s a slightly different vibe than the beaches just south of it, more laid-back, less about being seen.

Banana Beach

Tucked below a cliff near the old port area, Banana Beach is smaller and a little harder to find on purpose, which is part of the appeal. Above it sits Clara, a sprawling outdoor bar built into the cliffside with sea views that make it worth the climb back up after.

Jaffa and Charles Clore Park

If you walk south past the main strip of beaches, you’ll hit Charles Clore Park, a grassy area right on the water with Old Jaffa’s stone buildings and clock tower rising up just beyond it. The beach here is wider and less crowded than the central stretch, and the view back toward the city skyline at sunset is one of the better photo spots in Tel Aviv.

Worth the Drive: Herzliya Marina

About twenty minutes north of the city, Herzliya has its own beaches that feel noticeably calmer than anything downtown. The marina area has nicer beach clubs, cleaner sand in general, and far fewer crowds even in peak summer. If you have a rental car or don’t mind a short cab ride, it’s a nice change of pace from the energy of the city beaches.

A Few Practical Notes

City beaches in Tel Aviv are free and open to everyone, no entry fee, no membership required. Lifeguards run a flag system, white usually means conditions are calm and safe, black means swim with some caution, and red means stay out of the water. It’s worth a quick glance at the flag before you head in, especially if there’s any wind that day.

On Saturdays, some of the beachside cafes open later than usual since it’s Shabbat, but the beaches themselves are open and often busier than any other day of the week.

Between the city beaches and a short trip up to Herzliya, there’s enough variety here to fill several days without ever booking a single tour. And if a beach day turns into the start of a longer trip, it’s worth having that sorted before you land.
