Arrive early. That’s the single piece of advice that matters more than any other for a Red Rocks show, and here’s how the night actually unfolds once you’ve done that.
Picking a Parking Lot
Lots are first come, first served, and they open a couple of hours before doors, which is the real reason to arrive early. The tradeoff between them is simple once someone explains it. Upper lots mean a shorter walk to your seats, but a steeper one. Lower lots mean a longer walk in, and a noticeably faster exit once the show ends. Neither is wrong. Pick based on whether you’d rather spend the effort before the show or the patience after it.
The Walk Is Real
Red Rocks has earned its reputation as a workout before the show even starts. The amphitheatre is carved into the hillside, and getting to your seats means stairs, sometimes a lot of them, regardless of which lot you parked in. Comfortable shoes matter more here than at almost any other venue, and if you’re bringing anyone who has trouble with stairs, it’s worth looking into accessible seating and parking options ahead of time rather than discovering the layout the hard way.
Getting Through the Gate
Red Rocks restricts bags by size and by how many compartments they have, and the rules have tightened in recent years, so a bag that was fine a few seasons ago isn’t guaranteed to be fine now. Small purses, fanny packs, and hydration packs have their own allowances. Check the venue’s permitted items page while you’re packing rather than at the gate. Security lines move, but they move faster when nobody in front of you is repacking a bag they should have left in the car.
Once You’re Inside
The elevation here is higher than Denver proper, and combined with sitting outside after dark, temperatures drop more than a lot of visitors expect, even in summer. A layer you can put on once the sun goes down earns its space in the bag. The rock formations that give the venue its name and its famous acoustics deserve a look even before the show starts, since they’re lit differently depending on the time of day and the season.
Getting Out
Leaving is where the night can turn frustrating if you’re not prepared for it. A full amphitheatre emptying into a limited number of exits and a shared parking area takes time no matter how efficient you are about it. Bring water, expect a wait, and treat the walk back to the car as part of the show rather than an inconvenience tacked onto the end of it.
