What Makes Cabo Verde Different From Most Destinations

Cabo Verde catches a lot of travelers off guard. You fly in expecting a simple beach vacation, and then you start realizing how spread out everything actually is. Ten islands scattered across the Atlantic, each one with its own personality and its own set of logistical challenges. The infrastructure varies enormously depending on which island you land on. Getting between them means hopping on small inter-island planes or taking ferries that run on a fairly unpredictable schedule.

That geographic reality matters a lot for travel insurance. The healthcare situation on the outer islands is genuinely limited. If something goes wrong on Boa Vista or Fogo beyond a minor scrape, you are probably looking at an evacuation. That is not meant to scare anyone off — Cabo Verde is an incredible, welcoming place to visit. It just means you should understand what you are getting into before you go, and make sure your coverage actually matches your plans.

Most travelers we talk to are heading to one of three areas: Sal Island for the beach and water sports scene, the capital Praia on Santiago, or the cultural hub of Mindelo on São Vicente. Each one has different risks, and each one deserves a slightly different conversation.

Santa Maria and Sal Island

Sal is where the majority of international package tours land. The airport at Espargos handles most of the direct flights from Europe, and the resort town of Santa Maria is a short drive south. The beaches are spectacular, the wind is almost always blowing, and Sal has become one of the more well-known destinations in the world for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

That last part matters for your insurance. Water sports are exactly the kind of activity that a lot of standard travel policies quietly exclude in the fine print. If you are renting kite gear, taking lessons, or doing anything beyond lying on a towel near the water, you need to check your policy carefully. Some carriers require an adventure sports add-on, and others exclude kitesurfing entirely regardless of skill level. We see this catch people completely off guard after something has already gone wrong.

Even if you never touch a kite, the sun and heat on Sal deserve real respect. The UV index is intense year round, and the dry heat combined with ocean wind can mask how dehydrated you are getting. Heat exhaustion and severe dehydration are genuinely common reasons visitors end up at the local health post. The medical options on Sal are limited — there is a hospital in Espargos, but for anything beyond basic stabilization, you will likely be on a plane to Praia or evacuated further to Portugal. Medical evacuation coverage is not optional for a trip to Sal.

Petty theft on the beach is also something to keep in mind. Unattended bags near the water are an obvious target. Understanding what your policy says about personal items — and whether theft from a beach is actually covered — is worth checking before you go.

  • Best fit coverage: Water sports coverage and medical evacuation
  • Common pain point: Adventure sport exclusions that catch people off guard
  • Useful add on: Baggage protection for beach gear and electronics

Praia

Praia is the capital and the most populated city in the country, sitting on the southern end of Santiago Island. It is a genuine working African city — busy, dense, a bit chaotic in the best possible way, and really interesting if you take the time to explore it. Most of the country’s best medical infrastructure is here. If you need to be evacuated from one of the outer islands, Praia is typically where you end up first before anything more involved happens.

Petty crime is more of a concern in Praia than in the resort areas on Sal. The Plateau neighborhood and the main market areas attract crowds, which attract opportunistic theft. Walking around with expensive camera gear or being visibly distracted in a busy area is asking for a bit of trouble. Baggage and personal effects coverage is a practical thing to have, and being clear-eyed about the actual limits on those policies is worthwhile.

Medical care in Praia is considerably better than anywhere else in the archipelago. Private clinics can handle a reasonable range of issues. For serious cases though, the realistic destination is often still Portugal — where many Cabo Verdean nationals go for complex care. So even in the capital, having medical evacuation coverage with strong limits stays important.

Inter-island connections also run through Praia. If you are building an itinerary that hops between islands, flight delays are just a fact of life here. The national carrier has a limited fleet, and mechanical issues or weather can push schedules around. Trip delay coverage can help cover an unexpected hotel night or a missed prepaid connection to another island.

  • Best fit coverage: Emergency medical and travel delay
  • Common pain point: Petty theft in crowded market and transit areas
  • Useful add on: Medical evacuation for transfers to Portugal for serious conditions

Mindelo

Mindelo on São Vicente is a very different experience from anywhere else in the archipelago. It is arguably the cultural soul of Cabo Verde — the city of Cesária Évora, of morna music drifting out of small bars, of Carnival celebrations that draw people from all across the islands and beyond. If you want to understand what Cabo Verde actually feels like past the beach resort scene, Mindelo is the place to go.

The medical situation here is limited. There is a hospital, but its capacity for handling complex emergencies is considerably lower than Praia. If you are planning to visit during Carnival, the crowds are massive, the energy is intense, and the kind of minor injuries that come with any festival setting are real. Getting to São Vicente requires flying in from Praia, and those inter-island connections can be unreliable.

Because Carnival packages in Mindelo involve significant upfront bookings for accommodation and festival access, trip cancellation coverage is genuinely valuable here. Lodging fills up months in advance for the Carnival period, and the cancellation windows are tight. Getting sick a few days before a trip like that and losing non-refundable hotel costs is painful. Having the right policy means you at least get that money back.

  • Common pain point: Non-refundable Carnival bookings made far in advance
  • Useful add on: Medical evacuation for emergencies requiring transfer to Praia or beyond

The Medical Reality Across the Islands

One theme runs through every island in Cabo Verde: the healthcare system is limited by international standards. Public facilities vary a lot by island, and outside of Praia, serious emergencies typically require evacuation. For anything requiring surgery, intensive care, or specialized treatment, the realistic destination is often Portugal — which is a very long distance from the middle of the Atlantic.

Air ambulance transports from Cabo Verde to Lisbon are not cheap. The coverage you need here is genuinely different from a trip to Europe where a solid hospital is usually not far away. When we talk to clients heading to Cabo Verde, we consistently look for policies with strong medical evacuation limits — coverage that explicitly handles international evacuations to medically appropriate facilities, not just the nearest local clinic.

It is also worth knowing that private facilities in Cabo Verde operate on a pay-as-you-go basis for foreign visitors. They are not going to work with your domestic health insurance back home in any direct way. A good travel policy often allows the insurance company to place a direct guarantee of payment with the local provider, so you are not scrambling to put an emergency hospitalization on your credit card in the middle of a health crisis.

Protecting the Financial Side of Your Trip

A lot of travelers book Cabo Verde on package deals through European tour operators, which can create an odd situation around refunds and cancellations. Some packages have decent protections built in, while others are essentially non-refundable the moment you book. Before assuming your package comes with cancellation flexibility, read the terms carefully.

If you have significant non-refundable costs on the line — international flights, independent accommodation, guided diving tours — trip cancellation coverage is worth having. Life is unpredictable. A family emergency, a sudden illness, a flight cancellation out of your home airport — any of these can unravel a trip before it starts.

And if you want total control over your plans, we should talk about a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade. Standard trip cancellation requires a specific covered reason to kick in. CFAR lets you cancel for literally any reason and get a significant portion of your costs back. It costs more and has strict purchase deadlines, but the flexibility it offers is real.

Having Someone to Call When Things Go Sideways

One thing we always bring up with island destinations is how much the 24-hour assistance line on your policy actually matters. If you are on a remote part of Sal or São Vicente and something goes wrong at two in the morning, you do not want to be searching the internet for hospitals. A good assistance team can direct you to the right facility, help coordinate care across islands, and start the process of arranging an evacuation if it comes to that.

Uncle Sheldon is not just about finding a policy and sending you off. We are real agents who are around to answer questions and help you understand exactly what your coverage does and does not do. If you are planning a trip to Cabo Verde — whether that is a kite week on Sal, a couple of nights in Praia, or the full Carnival experience in Mindelo — give us a call and let us help you put the right safety net in place before you go.
